On November 27, 2024, the BVES hosted the second BVES Investor Summit Europe at the Umweltforum in Berlin. More than 300 representatives from the finance sector, industry, and politics gathered to discuss the opportunities, challenges, and regulatory frameworks for investments in energy storage technologies. The event aimed to foster dialogue between industry and finance and to develop joint strategies for advancing the energy storage sector.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Sector Coupling and Storage as Keys to Decarbonization<\/h3>\n

Andreas Hauer, Chairman of the Board at ZAE Bayern and BVES Vice President, opened the summit with a clear message: storage technologies and sector coupling are essential to successfully decarbonize all sectors.<\/p>\n

The first session of the day focused on investment potential in emerging energy markets. Manuela Heise, Head of Infrastructure Funding at the Investitionsbank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB) and Chair of the BVES Finance Committee, emphasized that a successful energy transition cannot happen without storage. She highlighted the importance of a progressive regulatory framework to secure affordable and reliable energy.<\/p>\n

Pathways to Scaling Storage Solutions<\/h3>\n

Maria Leis from Breakthrough Energy stressed that we are not yet on track to deploy storage technologies at the required scale. She called for innovative financial instruments to make capital-intensive storage projects more attractive to investors.<\/p>\n

Dr. Casimir Lorenz of Aurora Energy Research highlighted the importance of robust business models for scaling energy storage. Christian Bauer and Britta Wi\u00dfmann from Watson Farley & Williams LLP examined the legal perspective, describing large-scale storage as essential yet illiquid infrastructure investments.<\/p>\n

Best Practices and Fresh Perspectives<\/h3>\n

Later sessions featured technology providers and project developers sharing best practices and financing models for storage projects across the electricity, heating, and mobility sectors. Finance industry representatives discussed strategies for mobilizing capital and minimizing risks associated with technology-based investments.<\/p>\n

Conclusions and Outlook<\/h3>\n

The summit concluded with a clear takeaway: the financial sector is ready to support climate-friendly technologies like energy storage and to help advance the energy transition. However, reliable regulatory frameworks and transparent policies are urgently needed to unlock this potential.<\/p>\n
